POLICY ON:  Student Behaviour

AIM:
The School has the highest expectations of all its students at all times. Students are expected to behave with consideration and courtesy to others, members of the School and the general public, including on their way to and from school.

PRINCIPLE:
The School follows an assertive discipline policy with rules, rewards and sanctions agreed and reviewed by governors, staff and students on a regular basis. Staff are required to be aware of assertive discipline techniques and to teach assertive discipline within their classrooms.

PRACTICE:
The behaviour policy supports the CODE OF CONDUCT,  Home-School Agreement and Equal Opportunity Act.  These help us to provide a happy and safe working environment at Battersea Park School.

Courtesy   Respect   Understanding Tolerance  Achievement   Safety   Consideration

It is essential that everyone respects and follows the code of conduct. All students, parents/carers and staff are expected to agree to the Home-School Agreement laid out in the student planner.

Rules
Classrooms need a simple set of rules so that teachers and students know what to do. Classrooms are complex places, as you might have noticed! It is difficult to think of any other social institution that is like a classroom; there are so many agendas, so much is happening at the same time and it is all on public display. If all this is not properly managed, the stress it generates can be overwhelming. However, we can simplify matters by focusing on the primary purpose of a classroom - teaching and learning. And if that is to take place, students and adults alike need to feel secure and valued.

The School rules are to be displayed and followed in every classroom:

1. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS

2. BRING ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS TO CLASS EACH DAY

3. RESPECT EACH OTHER'S SPACE AND POSSESSIONS

4. NO NAME CALLING, CUSSING, SWEARING OR SHOUTING OUT

5. STAY IN YOUR SEAT UNLESS YOU ARE DIRECTED NOT TO

6. NO DRINKING, CHEWING OR EATING IN CLASS

Core Routines are to be followed by staff and students.

Rewards
Merits are awarded for good behaviour or work (indicated on work with a merit stamp)
5 Merits in one subject = Gold Slip

5 Gold Slips in one subject = Subject Certificate (and a prize)

3 Subject Certificates in one subject = Principals Commendation (and a prize)
Rewards must be GIVEN REGULALY TO MOTIVATE THE STUDENTS, and RECORDED using sims - do not forget other types of rewards such as:

Good note in personal organiser
Positive letter/phone call home
Display good work
Positive comments when marking work
Praise
Prizes - class/group/individual

Sanctions
Battersea Park School sanctions are as follows:

1. WARNING

2. 5 MINUTE DETENTION

3. 15 MINUTE DETENTION, REFERRAL AND THINK SHEET

4. 30 MINUTE DETENTION, REFERRAL, COMPLETION OF THJNK SHEET AND
    CONTACT HOME

5. REMOVAL FROM CLASSROOM TO CURRICULM TEAM LEADER AND UP TO 1
    HOUR DETENTION

The most serious sanction the School can give for behaviour is exclusion from school. Depending on the severity and consistency of the behaviour the exclusion may be internal or external (which in turn may be permanent or temporary). Behaviour, which could lead to exclusion, includes:

Bullying
Theft
Possessing, consuming or trading illegal substances
Possessing real or imitation weapons
Wilfully causing damage to School property or acting in a manner which endangers the health and safety of others
Persistently refusing to follow directions

Referrals
Referrals are used to inform staff of incidents and act as a permanent record on the student files.
Staff should complete referrals as outlined in the sections on sanctions and lateness. Referrals should be completed on sims for access from HOYs, tutors and CTLs.

Teaching staff should ensure that all sanctions are followed through and details of actions taken are recorded on sims. Incidents should be discussed with the curriculum leader if further action is required.

Curriculum Team Leaders should ensure that teaching staff follow the correct procedures for sanctions, that appropriate action is taken for students who are persistently poorly behaved, and that referral slips are completed correctly with the student's full name and tutor group.

Tutors should ensure that details of referrals are maintained for ease of monitoring individual students. Progress of students and possible support strategies for students causing concern are discussed with the Head of Year. Strategies could include the involvement of a Learning Mentor or a meeting with parents.

Heads of Year should ensure that tutors monitor referrals and take appropriate action for students causing particular concern. These can be discussed with the Head of Inclusion.

Reports
Students may be placed on report to enable tutors or Heads of Year to monitor individuals identified as being a cause for concern on a daily basis. The student is set specific targets that subject staff should comment on for each lesson. This may also be used at the request of a parent to monitor general progress in lessons. All reports should be sent to the office for filing when completed.

An individual subject report may be used by curriculum leaders to monitor the progress of a student who is of particular concern in their subject area. Students must report to the curriculum leader to have the report signed at the end of each lesson in that subject. Progress may be reviewed at an agreed time at the end of the week. All reports should be sent to the office for filing when completed.

Round Robins are used to gather information on individual students. This is usually appropriate before a meeting with parents or before making decisions about a student who is a particular cause for concern.

Racial Incidents
All racial incidents are taken very seriously at Battersea Park School and must be recorded on the racial incident monitoring form and placed in the racial incident monitoring folder in the office of the principal's P A

Bullying
The School acknowledges that bullying is a concern of students and that it might take a variety of forms. Bullying will not be tolerated. There is a separate bullying policy.

Uniform
All students in years 7 - 11 must wear the standard School uniform. A smart and correct appearance is essential in encouraging students to take pride in themselves, the institution they attend and their work

Property
Students are responsible for the security of all their personal possessions. The School is not insured for the loss or damage of students' belongings. Parents are advised to ensure that any items of value brought to school i.e. watches, are covered by their own insurance policy.

The School does not allow mobile phones, personal stereos or personal computer games to be brought on site. Staff may confiscate these item if
seen, to be placed in the School safe until collected by a parent.

If a parent requires a student to carry a mobile phone for safety reasons, they do so at their own risk. The School cannot take responsibility for loss or damage. The phone must not be switched on or used at any time during the school day.

School property must be treated with respect at all times. Students encouraged to do this as part of their role in the life of the School. Where deliberate damage to school property has occurred, parents will be contacted and the cost of replacement may be requested.
