POLICY ON: Attendance and Punctuality
AIMS:
To ensure all students achieve a high standard of attendance and punctuality. The importance of attendance and punctuality should be valued and viewed as an expectation of the school.
PRINCIPLES:
• Good attendance and punctuality is a basic expectation of the school.
• A good record of attendance and punctuality indicates respect for the school and its community.
• Excellence in terms of attendance should be rewarded.
• All members of school staff should implement the school policy to improve attendance.
• Strong links with outside agencies, such as the EWO should be maintained to promote good attendance and punctuality.
• Positive and regular communication with parents will help establish an effective “home- school partnership” that promotes good attendance and punctuality.
• The importance of attendance and punctuality should be publicised through assemblies, school displays and parent evenings.
PRACTICE:
Tutors and Subject Teachers.
• Tutors are responsible for registering students each morning and afternoon. All registers to be “sent” using bromcom.
• LR1 and LR2 letters should be sent to students who are persistently late. The office staff will generate the letters when tutors have provided them with names.
• PA1 and PA2 letters should be sent to students who have unauthorised absence. The office staff will generate the letters when tutors have provided them with names.
• Subject teachers are responsible for registering students during lessons. All registers to be “sent” using bromcom.
• Tutors pass on any ongoing concerns regarding attendance to the Head of Year. The office staff make home contact on the first day of absence.
• When tutors/ subject teachers phone home to discuss academic progress, the issue of attendance and punctuality should be raised.
• Tutors should ensure attendance and punctuality is given a high profile through the use of classroom displays.
HOYs and CTLs.
• HOYs and CTLs are responsible for ensuring the correct procedures are being followed within their teams. Bromcom should be monitored to ensure registers are being taken.
• The Head of Year meets with the EWO on a fortnightly basis and will refer students who are causing concern.
• Attendance should be given a high profile through school displays. HOYs should also encourage competition between forms during assemblies.
• Good attendance should be rewarded at the end of each term with certificates. The attendance Keys should be given out at the end of the year in year group ceremonies.
• Standard letters should be sent at the end of every term to congratulate students who have achieved over 98% attendance. HOYs should provide the office staff with a list of names and they will generate the letters.
• There are standard letters to be sent home at the end of each half term for those students with less than 80% attendance.
• There is a standard letter for students’ whose overall attendance has fallen below 90%. This can be sent at any time during the year.
• The HOYs need to provide the EWO with a list of names of students who are causing concern and will be asked to sit before the “attendance panel”. These are timetabled in the school calendar.
Designated member of Leadership Group Team.
• Designated member of LT oversees the attendance and punctuality policy.
• There is a report to complete at the end of every term for the DFES and the town hall.
• An attendance report is presented to the Performance and standards committee. Trends over time are identified.
• Attendance rewards are organised through the course of the year. (attendance trip and keys)
• Through the use of displays and assemblies, attendance is given a high profile around the school.
• Liaises with EWO (planning panels and other support).
