BTEC Nationals in Sport
Number of lessons per fortnight: 8 What are BTEC Nationals in Sport? It is a level 3 qualification where learners can achieve an equivalent of an AS level, one, two or three A-Levels. This will depend upon the route chosen by the students; it will be either: Level 3 Certificate, where 30 credits (normally 1 year) equal 1 AS level. A subsidiary Diploma 60 credit (normally 1 yr) equals 1 A level. The Diploma has 120 credits (normally 2 years) the equivalent of 2 A levels Extended Diploma 180 credits (normally 2/3 years) equates to 3 A levels. The new BTEC Nationals incorporate functional skills and the personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS) which offers opportunities for nested provision and flexibility of delivery. Furthermore, the course is designed to accommodate the needs of employers as well as allowing progression for students who wish to attend university. The BTEC Nationals also form the Technical Certificate component of apprenticeships and all attract UCAS points for those wishing to apply for University in the future. The Level 2 Diploma is a prerequisite for any of the Level 3 Nationals. It has been developed to provide the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare our students for employment or a career with a sporting theme. The Level 2 and 3 qualifications are gained by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities. The course is both practical and theory based allowing learners to access the content from contrasting areas. How is the course assessed? Since September 2010, the BTEC qualification has been revised under the QCF, where a number of points will be scored per credit. The old GLH has been converted to credits. Those students who started prior to 2010 will still be assessed on the old syllabus. Students will build up a portfolio of work in line with the exam board specification and this will be assessed upon completion of each unit and throughout the year to monitor progress. Assessment will come at the end of each term for each unit you have covered. Reaching a specific grading criteria’s will determine which grade you’ve obtained, a Pass (C), Merit (B) or a Distinction (A) Just like the Level 2, mandatory units are compulsory to pass this course, and at Level 3 they can range from 4 to 9 units. Homework: Students will be expected to use free periods and non contact time to work independently to complete the tasks set and meet the given criteria. Contact:
