Subject: BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science

 

Number of lessons per fortnight: 10

 Exam board: Edexcel

 This course builds on scientific knowledge from both Key Stage 3 and 4. However, the course is comprised entirely of coursework assignments and there are no examinations.

 Assessment

There are SIX modules which will be covered over the course of the two years. The three MANDATORY units will be completed in year 12 and the three OPTIONAL units will be completed in year 13. The units are as follows:

 Year 12:

  • Fundamentals of Science
  • Working in the Science Industry
  • Scientific Practical Techniques

Year 13:

  • Criminology
  • Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis
  • Criminal Psychology

Gradings

 

There are 3-4 assignments for each of the units listed above.

 

PASS: All assignments must be of a PASS standard or above

 

MERIT: All assignments must be of a MERIT standard or above

 

DISTINCTION: All assignments must be of a DISTINCTION standard or above

Homework

Homework will be ongoing in this subject due to the nature of the work and the number of assignments that will be required. Students will be provided with a folder to store all their assignment work in. This folder will remain in school at ALL times

Finally:

This course is less academically demanding than a scientific A level. HOWEVER, it will require:

  • EXCELLENT ORGANISATION
  • EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE
  • GOOD INDEPENDENT LEARNING SKILLS
