Subject: AS Sociology

Curriculum:

AQAAS Sociology is a great choice of subject forpeople who want a career in social work,nursing or medicine, but the subject is alsouseful in a number of other careers, such as marketing, advertising, PR, journalism, law or teaching.

The Sociology A Levelcourse helps students develop a number of new skills such as:

  • How to use evidence to support their arguments
  • How to investigate facts and use deduction
  • How to put over your point of view fluently
  • How to take responsibility for your own learning

The course is split into two modules:

Unit 1 – SCLY1 Families and Households

Unit 2 – SCLY2 Education and Research methods

Unit 1 SCLY1Students study a range of topics from the relationship of the family to social structure and social change, with particular reference to the economy and to state policies, as well as focusing on the nature of childhood and changes in the status of children in the family and society.

Unit 2 – SCLY2 The second taught topic, ‘Education with Research Methods’;is the second unit of the course where students study topics from the functions of education, the history of the education system and Government policies whilst identifying the various factors that affect a person’s educational achievement

Assessment:

The course is 100% examination based. The unit 1-SCLY1 module is assessed   with a written paper of 1 hour worth 60 marks.  The students choose one topic ‘Family and Households’ and answer five questions. This part of the course makes up 40% of the AS grade and 20% of their A Level grade. Unit 2-SCLY2 is worth 60% of the AS grade and 30% of their A Level grade. The students are assessed with a written paper of 2 hours worth 90 marks.

Available for examination in January 2012 and June 2012

Homework:

Reading assignments, research tasks, critical analysis essays and sociological studies are set twice weekly, with students submitting essays to their respective teachers.
