Subject: A2 Sociology

 Curriculum:

The AQAA2 Sociology qualification builds on the independent and analytical study undertaken at AS level. It is a great choice of subject forpeople who want a career in social work,nursing or medicine, but the subject is alsouseful in a number of other careers, such as marketing, advertising, PR, journalism, law or teaching.

The Sociology A Levelcourse helps students develop a number of new skills such as:

  • How to use evidence to support their arguments
  • How to investigate facts and use deduction
  • How to put over your point of view fluently
  • How to take responsibility for your own learning
  • ­­­­­­­

Unit 3 – SCLY3Beliefs in Society

Unit 4 – SCLY4 Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods

In Unit 3-SCLY3 Students study these five main areas:

1. Theories of Religion

2. Religion and Social Change

3. Religious organisation and Movements

4. Explaining  Religious Organisations and Movements in relation to   social factors

5. The Secularisation debate

In Unit 4-SCLY4 Students study these main areas:

  1. Controlling solutions to crime
  2. Explanations of crime in relation to age, ethnicity, gender, social class and locality
  3. Theories of crime, deviance, social order and social control
  4. Youth and deviance

Assessment:.

In the Unit 3-SCLY3 examination, the students answer two compulsory questions and one question from a choice of two.

In the Unit 3-SCLY4 examination, the students choose one topic from two and answer two questions on Crime and deviance, with two/three questions on sociological research methods in context and one question on theory and methods.

Examinations available January 2012 and June 2012

Homework:

Reading assignments, research tasks, critical analysis essays and sociological studies are set twice weekly, with students submitting essays to their respective teachers.
