Subject: AS and A2 GCE in Biology

Number of lessons per fortnight: 10

Exam board: AQA

This course builds on the knowledge understanding and skills developed in the National Curriculum KS4 programme of study for Double and Triple Science.

Successful completion of AS and A2 Biology offers candidates several routes for progression, including:

  • A range of higher education courses, including degrees (e.g. medicine, life sciences, applied sciences, sport science)
  • Direct entry into Science related employment
  • Next level of vocational Science qualifications (e.g. laboratory research, Forensic Science)

Assessment

There are 3 units running for AS Biology and 3 units running for A2 Biology with a Summer examination period where students will also be asked about experimental and investigative skills that they have been working on throughout the year. There will be practical assessments in every unit.

Homework

Homework is set at least twice a week and may include worksheets, research, revision, reading and writing up practical work. Homework related to practical assessments will take priority. Students will be expected to do independent reading around each subject we study.

Equipment requirements/recommended texts

Students will receive an A-level Biology text book in the first half term, as well as having access to online materials directly related to the course. If students wish to purchase other A-level Biology materials it would be advantageous for them to do so. Students will be expected to bring their own equipment, i.e. pen, pencil, ruler etc.
