Subject: Spanish AS
Number of Lessons per fortnight:5. This course is taught by Ms Garcia. The AS course is designed to provide an appropriate assessment of knowledge, understanding and skills expected of students who have completed the first half of a full Advanced Level qualification. The AS course in Spanish encourages students to develop a sound understanding of the spoken and written forms of Spanish, to communicate confidently and effectively in Spanish and to develop critical insights into, and contact with, the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries where Spanish is spoken. Autumn term activities: Year 12 spend the autumn term completing unit 1 (Young people today). The aim of the module is to consolidate your understanding of the notion of family, relationships, rights and responsibility, jobs and careers. Spring term activities: Year 12 spend the spring term completing unit 2 (Aspects of society). Students will be expected to broaden their knowledge of the media, pollution, immigration and multiculturalism in Spanish speaking countries. Summer term activities: Year 12 spend the summer term completing unit 3 (People and society). This module is based on topics areas listed under “Young people today”, namely: the family and relationships, rights and responsibilities, leisure, healthy living, education, jobs and careers together with some topics studied in Unit 2. Assessment: The assessment has a modular structure. The AS awards comprise two compulsory assessment units which assess the teaching and learning modules described in the subject content: Unit 1: Listening, Reading and Writing Unit 2: Speaking Test Homework: Homework is given at least twice a week and involves either working from worksheets or questions / tasks copied from the book. Equipment requirements / recommended texts: All students must have a pen. The MFL department will provide a textbook for each student Course Entry Requirements: You must gain at least a C grade in Spanish GCSE and should have a good general knowledge and understanding required for the course.
