Subject: GCSE English Language and English
The AQA English Language GCSE Specification A course is one which encourages students to use language accurately and skillfully in a range of assignments and to question the way in which language is used in a variety of genres. Media texts, non-fiction texts, poetry, novels and plays are all studied and opportunities are given to develop reading and writing skills. In addition to this, the ability to listen and participate in speaking and listening assignments is an important aspect of the course. How is the course taught? This course is taught across the three main disciplines of GCSE English which are speaking and listening assessments, reading assignments and written essays. Students are taught in academic ability groups using a range of teaching methods such as: group work, presentations, role plays, debates and extended projects. They will also work on developing their literacy skills and applying them in everyday functional English situations. How are they assessed? Unit 1: Understanding and Producing Non-fiction Texts External examination 40% of the total GCSE marks 2 hours and 15 mintues 80 marks
Section A: Reading 20% of the total GCSE marks 1 hour 15 minutes 40 marks
Section B: Writing 20% of the total GCSE marks 1 hour 40 marks
Unit 2: Speaking and Listening Controlled Assessment 20% of the total GCSE marks 45 marks Unit 3: Understanding Spoken and Written Texts and Writing Creatively Controlled Assessment 40% of the total GCSE marks 80 marks
Part a: Extended Reading 15% of the total GCSE marks 3–4 hours 30 marks
Part b: Creative Writing 15% of the total GCSE marks 3–4 hours 30 marks
Part c: Spoken Language Study 10% of the total GCSE mark 2–3 hours 20 marks
The course is assessed through a combination of controlled assessment and examination. What qualifications will they gain?
On successful completion of this course the students will be awarded a GCSE English Language qualification
English GCSE NB: Students who take English Language GCSE must also take English Literature GCSE. Students who need to focus on gaining a C or above in just one GCSE in this subject will take English GCSE only. This is the same as English Language GCSE, but the Spoken Language Study is replaced by a Shakespeare Study. Students who take this path do not need to study for an English Literature GCSE at the same time, allowing more focus on completing the English GCSE course to the best of their ability.

Studying GCSE English is an excellent foundation for a Level 3 qualification, such as GCE English Literature GCE English Language GCE History GCE Government and Politics GCE Media Studies GCE Psychology GCE Sociology
If I study this course which university and career Pathways are open to students?
Following the completion of this course students could choose to read English, Law, History, Communication studies, Psychology and Sociology at university at degree level. The academic nature of the course is an excellent foundation for a career in the media, broadcasting or journalism.
