Subject: GCSE English Literature

 

The AQA Specification A English Literature GCSE is a course which encourages candidates to develop the ability:

  • to read, understand and respond to a wide range of types of literary texts,
  • to appreciate the ways in which authors achieve their effects, and
  • to acquire the skills necessary for literary study;

In addition, the course aims to build an awareness of social, historical and cultural contexts and influences in the study of literature with the ability to construct and convey meaning in speech and writing, by matching style to audience and purpose.

How is the course taught?

This course is taught across the three main disciplines of GCSE English which are speaking and listening assessments, reading assignments and written essays. Students are taught in academic ability groups using a range of teaching methods such as: group work, presentations, role plays, debates and extended projects. Students also work on developing their literacy skills and applying them in everyday functional English situations.

How are they assessed?

The course is assessed through a combination of homework, controlled assessment and examination.

External examination

Section A:Modern Prose or Drama

20% of the total GCSE marks

 Section B:Exploring Cultures

Unit 2: Poetry Across Time

External examination

35% of the total GCSE marks

 Section A: Poetry cluster

 What qualifications will they gain?

 On successful completion of this course they will be awarded a GCSE English Literature qualification.

 NB: Students who take this GCSE must also take English Language GCSE.
