Level 1 & Level 2 Certificate in “Preparation for Working Life”

 Number of Lessons: one per fortnight

 Course Description:

Preparation for Working Life offers certification of courses related to PSHE, Careers Education work, Citizenship and Work Experience.

The aims of this specification are to encourage candidates to:

  • play an active role as citizens;
  • have greater awareness of lifestyle issues and how keep themselves and others safe;
  • demonstrate an understanding of organization structure and the role of the employee within this structure;
  • understand a range of employment opportunities and qualifications needed for employment;
  • be able to apply the knowledge, skills and understanding developed at school in the work place;.
  • have the knowledge and confidence to make personal economic decisions

 

Autumn term activities:

Year 10 spend the Autumn Term completing two sections:

 

  • Personal Awareness: physical, social, mental, emotional health

 

  • Healthy Lifestyles: candidates are required to understand the need of a balanced diet, regular exercise, intellectual stimulation, the need for rest, sleep and recreation. Understand the health risks of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and to recognise health and safety requirements and first aid techniques.

 

Spring term activities:

Year 10 spend the Spring Term completing two sections:

 

  • Relationships and the Differences between People: candidates will learn the differences between formal and informal relationships at work, in the family and community. Values of family. Different backgrounds and cultures and how this may alter ones beliefs.

 

  • The Changing World of Work: candidates learn different types of work, positive and negatives effect of technology at work, the change of work choice due to technology. The impact of industry in the environment.

 

Summer term activities:

Year 10 spend the Summer Term completing one section, linked to and to prepare for Work Experience:

 

  • Hazard Identification at Home, on the Road and at Work:students will identify dangerous, unsafe and unhygienic practices. Brief understanding of the Health & Safety Act. Understand the importance of road safety for both pedestrian and drivers.

 

Assessment:

This 2 year Certificate of Preparation for Working Life is assessed at Level 1 and level 2. Level 1 is the equivalent to GCSE D-G whilst a certificate at Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE A* - C.

At Level 1 candidates will require to produce the quality of work expected for a Short Course GCSE grade G or higher and GCSE grade C or higher for Level 2

 

The examination will take place at the end of Year 11:

 

 

Written Paper (external assessment)

 

Controlled Assessment (internal assessment)    

1 ½ hours written paper                    

80% of overall assessment

 

Section A – multiple choice answers

Section B – short sentence answers  

Section C – longer, structured questions  

20% of overall assessment

 

Candidates are required to produce:

 

  1. A letter of application for a job or course to accompany a CV
  2. A Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  3. Notes on Interview Preparation

       

Homework:

Homework is given out fortnightly and either involves research, writing articles / letters, design posters, do interviews, create quizzes, past papers and questions or revision of given topics.

Equipment requirements / recommended texts:

All students must have a pen, pencil, rubber and ruler (colour pencils are optional but useful). Students will receive a green exercise book and a folder.
