Subject: FRENCH/ SPANISH FCSE
Number of lessons per fortnight Y10 Purple Band: 4
Students in the Purple Band will follow either French or Spanish Foundation Certificate of Secondary Education course. French is taught by Ms Z. Von Pfefer and Spanish by Ms L. Garcia. The FCSE MFL is a two-year course leading pupils to their final exam in Year 11. This new course will help pupils to develop their language skills in a variety of contexts. Pupils will be studying 12 Units tailored around the 4 major Contexts and Purposes: Lifestyle, Holidays and Leisure, My world and The Young Person in Society. Pupils will be continuously assessed in all four skills throughout the course working initially to Level 1 (equivalent to Grade E at GCSE level) and progressing to complete Level 2 (equivalent to a Grade B at GCSE level)
• FCSEs are qualifications at Level 1 in the National Qualification Framework • 3 levels of award are available: Pass, Merit and Distinction (which correspond to National Curriculum level 4, 5 and 6) ●Pupils will be expected to produce a total of 12 assignments. In their portfolio pupils will need to submit 10 in total from the 12 produced ie. 3 listening, 3 reading, 3 writing plus 1 recorded speaking assignment. • Listening and Reading count for 50% and are externally-set assessed • Speaking and Writing count for 50% and are Teacher- Controlled assignments. • FCSE awards are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Homework: All pupils receive homework once a week for the language they learn. Students are given a variety of tasks to complete for homework. Homework may also be set that includes research, worksheets and tasks to help towards their controlled assessments. It is essential that they have a bilingual dictionary at home. Equipment requirements / recommended texts: Pupils will be provided with an exercise book and a textbook to use in lessons. A language dictionary will be essential for them to have in order to complete their coursework. In addition, the standard equipment, a blue/black ink pen, pencil, sharpener, eraser and a ruler will be required. Students are encouraged to visit French/Spanish related web sites for help regarding their coursework.
