MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (French/ Spanish) PDF Print E-mail

Subject:  MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (French/ Spanish)

Number of Lessons per fortnight: 6

All students in Year 7 will study either French or Spanish.

French is taught by Mr C. Konan and Ms Z. Von Pfefer and Spanish by Ms L. Garcia and Ms A. Entcheva.

 Autumn term activities:

In the first term pupils learn to ask and answer simple questions about themselves in French or Spanish. They learn the names of classroom objects and some basic rules for pronunciation and spelling. Pupils will also learn to talk and write about themselves and other people.

 Spring term activities:

During the second term pupils learn to ask and answer questions about where they live. They also learn to say what time it is in French or Spanish. They begin to find their way around an English/French or an English/Spanish glossary. Pupils will use more verbs to describe what they and others do. They learn new ways of asking questions and develop independent reading skills.

 Summer term activities:

Year 7 spend the summer term learning to express opinions and give reasons for them. They talk about what they and other people like and dislike. They also use a dictionary to look up adjectives and form sentences about their school. This term, the final one in year 7, builds on much of the prior learning in the previous terms and provides pupils with an opportunity to use the language they have learnt throughout the year to communicate on the subject of hobbies and interests.

 Assessment:

Every pupil at KS3 is assessed against National Curriculum criteria in each of the four skills. All pupils are assessed in a variety of ways:

  • End of unit tests in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to check students’ progress take place on at least three occasions during the year and the results are recorded centrally.
  • Assessment for reading and writing are based on evidence in students’ exercise books, which are marked by the class teacher.

 Homework:

All pupils receive homework once a week for the language they learn.  Students are given a variety of tasks to complete for homework:

  • Learn new words
  • Answer questions on a written text
  • Do a piece of writing
  • Learn a dialogue

 Equipment requirements / recommended texts:

Pupils will be provided with an exercise book and a textbook to use in lessons.  A language dictionary will be necessary to be able to complete homework efficiently.  Also, the standard equipment required of the students is at least a blue/black ink pen, pencil, sharpener, eraser and a ruler.

Replacement exercise books are available from the MFL department for £0.50 if an exercise book is lost.
