PERSONAL, SOCIAL & HEALTH EDUCATION (2011-12)

 No of lessons:1 per fortnight

 Course description

 Autumn term:

 Students learn on the 1/1 of the term about Careers Education.

Contents:

  • review of their successes and failures up to secondary school,
  • reasons for homework
  • links between education and work,
  • how choices we made may affect our future careers
  • brief description of jobs and what they involve and
  • dealing with bullying

 

In the 2/2 of the term we focus on Citizenship issues.

Contents:

  • safety fire issues,
  • the law,
  • children’s rights,
  • responsibilities with the community and neighbourhood and
  • Citizenship and what it entails.

 

Spring term:

 

In the ½ of the term, students will be taught Sex Relationships Education, puberty and Health issues.

Contents:  

  • body changes
  • the emotional impact that puberty has,
  • how to get in touch with your feelings,
  • the importance of exercise and a healthy diet and
  • the influence of the media in the way we act or look

 Sex Education lessons are taught by a family Planning nurse / school nurse or the Wandsworth SRE Coordinator. Parents / carers will receive a letter regarding this lesson closer to the date. Optional withdrawal of students is available via reply slip.

 In the 2/2 of the term we continue with Health issues.

Contents:

  • explore the facts about smoking and the law on tobacco
  • drug taking and bullying and

 Summer Term:

 In the ½ of the term, students learn about developing relationships.

Contents:

  • types of  family
  • others beliefs and cultures,
  • discrimination
  • values: rights and wrongs

 In the 2/2 of the term, students focus on understanding oneself and about global issues.

Contents:

        -    anxieties and worries

        -    recycling

        -    differences in wealth in the world

        -   review of this year achievements and progress.

 Method:

Students will be taught these topics through group-work, discussion, debates and role-play/drama.

Sex Education lessons will be delivered by a Family Planning Nurse. A letter of consent to parents will be sent one month before the session starts.

 Homework:

Homework will be undertaken on a needs basis.  Students will have to do independent research on some topics. Homework will be set fortnightly.

 Equipment requirements:

Pen, pencil, rubber, ruler and newspapers, when required.

Exercise book is provided.
