Subject: Year 7 ICT
Number of Lessons per Fortnight: 2 ICT has been identified as a skill that is required for all students so that they will be more equipped for whatever learning pathway they chose to take. The units planned in Y7 will give students a good foundation on which to gain a greater understanding of computer processes. Autumn term activities: The term will start with an induction to the network at the school and e-safety. The focus will be on learning the ICT skills that the student already possesses and their usage of ICT both inside and outside of school. The students will also have the opportunity to create a game using Scratch. The classroom lessons will focus on learning the different parts of the computer and new technologies. Spring term activities: This term students will develop their use of spreadsheets as a way to model data. The students will also be developing research skills. They will look at effective searching and the concepts of bias and reliability. The classroom based lessons will consist of binary, image representation and text compression. Summer term activities: The summer term will consist of a Desktop Publishing unit so that the students have an awareness of the audience and the purpose of documents. The other units will be a web design unit. The classroom lessons will look at error detection, information theory and ICT in society including ICT and the law. Assessment: The students will be given a baseline test when they join the school so that an entry level is identified. Throughout the year there will be regular opportunities for assessing students’ progress, this could be achieved in a number of ways such as evidence portfolios, quizzes, tests and verbal presentations. Homework: Students will be set homework throughout the year to help support the learning that is happening in the classroom. Some homework will be internet based, but ICT rooms will be available during school hours and after school for students needing access to the internet. Equipment requirements/recommended texts: Due to the fact that the ICT lessons are both classroom based and computer based, students will be expected to have the standard equipment required: at least a blue/black ink pen, pencil, sharpener, eraser and a ruler.
