Number of Lessons: 2 per Fortnight  

 Throughout Key Stage 3 (years 7, 8 and 9), students study a range of music from different times in places.  In lessons, students work with keyboards, guitars, percussion, and their own voices.Students also have the opportunity to learn keyboard, guitar, singing or drums in a small group with one of our visiting instrumental teachers. There are a number of lunch time and after school clubs for students, including Gospel Choir, Steel Pans, Music Technology, and Big Band. Students also have the opportunity to perform at various events throughout the year, including the Xmas production, the Dance and Music showcase, and BPS’s own version of ‘The X factor’.

 Activities:

 Year 7

 In year 7, students study Samba, Programme Music, Musical Theatre, Music for Film and TV, and Soul Music. 

 Year 8

 In year 8, students study African Drumming, Musical Theatre, Gospel, Blues, and Experimental Music. 

 Year 9

 In year 9, students study Hip-Hop, Jazz, Folk Music (from Mexico), Music for Drama, and take part in a popular music project which lasts for a whole term. 

 Assessment:

 Assessment in Music lessons is both formative and summative including peer and self assessment, as well as graded assessment tasks.  Students are expected to know their current level and to know the steps necessary to progress.  Prior to each assessment task, students are actively engaged in working out the success criteria for the task.

 Students are assessed according to the National Curriculum for Music.
