Subject:   SCIENCE Year 8                                        

Number of Lessons Per fortnight:  7

 Autumn term activities: 

Students continue to build on their knowledge, understanding, investigative and practical skills through the teaching of the three main science subject areas under ‘How science works’ principles. This is in line with the Renewed Programme of study and Framework of teaching science. Specific modules studied this term include elements of biology, chemistry and physics, such as: Interaction; Rocks; Heating and Cooling and special focus on How science works activities in each module.

 Spring term activities:

Modules studied this term continue to include elements of biology, chemistry and physics, such as: Staying healthy; Chemical reactions; Light and sound and special focus on How science works activities in each module.

 Summer term activities:

Modules studied this term continue to include elements of biology, chemistry and physics, such as: Survival; Compounds and mixture; Magnetism and special focus on How science works activities on each module. In addition, lesson time will be used for revision in the run-up to the end of Year 8 Examination. There will be an opportunity for students to attend a science trip.

 Assessment:

Students’ assessment will take on the new approach (APP), Assessing Pupils’ Progress. APP involves a structured periodic assessment of students through evidence collected from their work. The evidence will be assessed against five Assessment Focuses.AF’s are closely linked to How Science works skills and Assessment for learning (AFL).In addition, there will be an important End of Year 8 Examination. The results will be used to place students in ability groups to Year 9.

 Homework:

Students’ homework will be based on literacy and numeracy skills. It will be set on a weekly basis.

 Equipment requirements / recommended texts:

The purchase of a Year 8 Go Science Book 1, Heinemann or Badger KS3 Science text, on level-assessed tasks: concepts/HSW is highly recommended (available from good book shops). The standard equipment required of students is at least a blue/black ink pen, pencil, sharpener, eraser and a ruler.
