Alpha Language                       Number of lessons per fortnight: 10

Curriculum:

The Alpha Language course is for pupils new to English and runs on a termly basis. The department currently uses the Cambridge Face 2 Face Programme of Study (Elementary and Starter Level). The course specifically addresses the basic English Language skills needed of EAL pupils. Pupils are equipped with subject specific vocabulary that will help them in real life situations and other curriculum areas. Pupils are also taught basic grammatical rules that will help them to complete writing activities in other curriculum areas.

Assessment:

Assessment takes place on a termly basis. Pupils are assessed in the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Pupils are assessed through the use of Review and Progress Portfolios. Reading and Writing Portfolios are also used for assessment. There are continual in class and homework assessments too.

Homework:

Homework is set twice a week. Pupils complete a number of activities in the Student’s Workbook which compliments the topics covered during lessons.
