Subject: SCIENCE Year 9 Number of Lessons Per fortnight: 7 Autumn term activities: Students continue to develop their knowledge, understanding, investigative and practical skills through the teaching of the 3 main science subject areas. Specific modules studied this term include elements of biology, chemistry and physics, such as: Chemical Reactions; Electricity and Magnetism; Elements. Spring term activities: Modules studied this term continue to include elements of biology, chemistry and physics, such as: The Active Body; Mixture and Compounds; Sight and Sound; Using Forces; Matter. Summer term activities: Modules studied this term continue to include elements of biology, chemistry and physics, such as: Health; Pollution; Variation; Energy; Lesson time will also be used for revision in the run-up to Year 9 Science Final examination. After the exams, students will undertake project work/be introduced to initial GCSE modules. There will be an opportunity to attend a science trip. Assessment: Students will be assessed using Assessment for Learning tools and other strategies on a regular basis to closely diagnose their progress throughout the year. They students will sit their end of KS3 exams, which will test all their knowledge and understanding from Years 7, 8 and 9. The results will be used to group students into ability groups for their GCSE studies in Year 10. Homework: 1 science based and 1 literacy based homework will be set on a weekly basis. Equipment requirements / recommended texts: The purchase of a Year 9 or Key Stage 3 Revision Guide is highly recommended (available from the Science Department). Revision work books will also be provided. The standard equipment required of students is at least a blue/black ink pen, pencil, sharpener, eraser and a ruler.
