Read/Write Number of lessons per fortnight: 8
Curriculum: Students new to literacy and English follow an intensiveEnglish language Programme. Theprogrammelasts for approximately 1 term. Pupils may follow the Programme for up to a year if necessary. The department currently uses the ‘Read Write: Fresh Start’Programmewhich helps students to become confident, fluent readers and writers. Students learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to sound-blend words and spell over a short period of time through short stories and non-fiction texts. Students’ writing skills are developed from simple sentence formation to guided composition. Assessment: An initial assessment takes place at the beginning of the course which assesses the reading age of each pupil. Assessment then takes place on a termly basis. It also takes place through regular dictation, self and peer assessment during lessons and homework. Homework: Homework is set once a week. Pupils are given a number of writing and comprehension tasks to complete that links to the text they are reading. Contact: Mrs A Scudamore
